The Farmers’ Roundup on Feb. 21st, brought farmers, food producers, and farm friends together to share what’s working, what’s not, and what we can build locally to strengthen farming and local food in the Shuswap. The discussion was organized around our four pillars — Farmers Exchange, Collaborate / Cooperate / Advocate / Educate, Create Infrastructure, and Productive Land — .

Many great ideas were generated and the ideas were practical, honest, and focused on real-world challenges. Click through to see the key themes we heard under each pillar, what has strong support, and the early next steps we’re aiming for.

the future: Cultivating Community

Discover how we support local farmers and families with sustainable solutions.

Farmers Exchange

An online platform for buying and selling livestock, feed, equipment, tools, and farm services, backed by Co-op-run live auctions to strengthen farmer-to-farmer trade and market access.

Collaborate / Cooperate / Advocate / Educate

Partner with local food organizations, advocate for small-scale farmers at all levels of government, and strengthen farm knowledge through mentorship and training with educational and non-profit partners.

Create Infrastructure

Build the physical backbone of the Co-op—central retail store, multi-temperature storage, livestock feed and supplies, a tool library, meeting space, and future satellite outlets—to support producers and ensure year-round access to local food.

Land into Production

Increase local food production by activating underused land, connecting growers with landholders, supporting greenhouse expansion, and helping secure fair, practical growing agreements.
